Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. She did not pursue acting as a career after reaching adulthood, as her parents were concerned about the adverse impact stress might cause. Perry claimed that she was nervous to be an actor in high school but began acting at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry made her debut with New York after graduation, landing minor parts in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry return to California and pursue a career as an actress in the theater. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. Perry was in the show with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was a part of the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's drama The Family. Perry was also featured in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. The character she played was the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. She was cast in the role despite her close familial connection to the character.
